Nestled against an existing pond, this property had the charm and atmosphere one might look for in a back yard, yet it lacked the aesthetic and functionality desired by this growing family. So when asked to design an outdoor retreat fit to entertain both large groups and small family gatherings, it seemed only appropriate to address the home’s surroundings by visually incorporating the “borrowed” landscape.
The challenges of this project were evident from the beginning. The house was positioned atop a five foot hill, leaving a 3500 square foot triangular shaped back yard sloping down towards the pond. This slope, in conjunction with existing mature tree clusters, made the layout and positioning of each element critical to the success of the project.
Inspired by the popular, yet opposing styles of the French Manor and modern architecture, this design hinges on a strong horizontal platform from which the detailed vertical focal points rise above. This simple, yet elegant juxtaposition is achieved through the use of a simple palette, clean, crisp lines and milled wood and limestone that set the stage of an entertainment space fit for both large groups and small family gatherings. The design evolved into a series of terraces, separated by decorative plantings, architectural features and accent lighting; each feature helping to uniquely define spaces that offer activities for adults and children to enjoy simultaneously. Axial design of an oversized spa, firepit, and fireplace aid in preserving and enhancing views from the upper terrace to the existing pond behind the home. An elevated deck, complete with custom kitchen and pergola, spans the connection between the upper terrace and the main rear entrance to the home, creating an activity hub within close proximity to both interior and exterior entertainment.
The end result is a comfortably elegant space with the modern sophistication and functionality desired by this growing family.
