While renovating their turn-of-the-century residence, our client was prompted to turn their attention to a declining landscape that no longer offered the function or aesthetic they desired. Drawing from the client’s sensitivity to the original architectural integrity of the home, preserving the character of the gardens and surrounding entertaining spaces were of top priority. Ideas for new and complimentary garden spaces were implemented, while existing features were enhanced.
This large, semi-wooded site offered many possibilities, yet the decision was made to focus our design efforts on the visual and physical interactions between the home and its directly adjacent gardens. The home’s kitchen focused on a formal garden that was redesigned with a more functional circulation pattern, hedge lined pathways and a classic plant pallet of cottage garden perennials and breath-taking seasonal color. Rear entertaining spaces focused on linking the interior entertaining spaces with their exterior counterpart. Creating relaxed comfort and specific, controlled views were made possible by way of screening, symmetry, and various focal points both near and far. Hand selection of the expanded stone terraces was vital to the success of the design as the existing terrace had been in place for decades. The result of the design is a spectacular sequence of garden spaces linking the home with its beautiful surroundings.
